There is a Galaxy Note7 with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage but you can’t have it

Before the Galaxy Note7 was revealed, there were speculation that the new Note will come with 6GB of RAM. Unlike previous Note models that offered a performance bump, we got a Galaxy Note7 that retains the same processor and RAM as its current Galaxy S7/S7 edge series.

Now it seems that there is indeed a higher spec model which will come with 6GB RAM and double the storage at 128GB on-board. Unfortunately, we won’t be seeing this on our shores and in most markets anytime soon.

In a report by Korea Herald, the head of Samsung Electronics Mobile business, Mr. DJ Koh, admitted that a model with 128GB storage is in the works for China because Chinese companies are aggressively marketing their products with high-capacity memory. Not surprising since most new flagships from China are sporting 6GB of RAM along with massive storage options.

While the current Exynos 8890 and 4GB RAM combo is sufficient for most people, Samsung is probably pressured to get themselves into the spec war in China where bigger numbers on paper is a big deal. Apart from the RAM and storage, the rest of the Galaxy Note7 for China is pretty much the same with an Exynos processor, dual-pixel 12MP main camera, 5MP selfie shooter and a 3,500mAh battery.

Although it is nice to have 6GB of RAM, we have yet to see if it brings actual real-world benefits. For example, the OnePlus 3 was initially found not making full use of its 6GB of RAM and it was managed intentionally for better battery life. Eventually, this was somewhat resolved with a new software update.

It’s also proven that more RAM does not necessary mean better performance. The latest iPhones including the iPhone 6s and iPhone SE are still running with just 2GB of RAM but they manage to smash most of its competitors on Antutu that offered twice the amount of RAM. Is having 6GB RAM a deal breaker for you? Let us know in the comments below.
