Uber or Grab? Google Maps now lets you compare ride sharing options

If you don’t like driving, hopping on a ride-sharing services are a great commuting alternative especially in the Klang Valley. If you take Uber and Grab a lot, here’s a Google Maps update that you won’t want to miss.

Apart from the usual driving, walking and public transport options, the latest Google Maps has a dedicated tab to compare ride service options in your location. For Malaysia and most South East Asia countries, Google Maps will show all available Uber and Grab options around your area with an estimated time and fare. It also supports GO-JEK, Gett, Hailo and MyTaxi in supported countries.

Apart from supporting ride sharing on maps, the new update also introduces a WiFi-Only option to help save on precious data. You’ll be prompted to download an offline map so you can still use maps for driving navigation in areas with zero or spotty internet. Do note that public transport directions are not available offline.

For entry-level smartphones with very little on-board storage, Google Maps will now allow you to save your offline maps on your external microSD card. A full offline map of the Klang Valley will take about 500MB to download and that’s a quite lot for those who are still using phones with only 4GB or 8GB of storage. If possible, Google Maps recommend using your phone’s internal storage for faster performance.

The updated Google Maps is available for both iOS and Android.
