Moto G 2015: Motorola’s popular mid-ranger gets upgraded and it comes with water resistance

Before Xiaomi and Huawei’s Honor sub-brand came into the picture, the Motorola Moto G was the original cheap and cheerful Android smart phone. Running on a stock operating system, it gets early access to the latest software updates and it feels very smooth to use despite having low to mid-range hardware.

With the rise of affordable and decent smart phones in the market, can the Moto G step up its game to maintain its relevance? We could probably say yes thanks to some minor tweaks that make quite a difference.

The Moto G in its 3rd iteration now gets a subtle tweak especially at the back where it gets a redesigned camera and Motorola logo placement. The front is still a compact 5″ display that’s perfect for single handed use and the screen resolution remains unchanged at 1280×720 resolution.

To withstand the elements, the front glass is toughen with Gorilla Glass 3 and this time, the Moto G comes with IPX7 water resistant. This protects the device from accidental splashes or drops into the pool as it can withstand being submerged up to 1 metre of fresh water for up to 30 minutes.

Under the hood, it gets an updated mid-range Quad-Core Snapdragon 410 processor but it runs on a higher 1.4GHz. As comparison, the Redmi 2 and Galaxy A5 are powered by a similar processor but on a lower 1.2GHz clock speed. Usually the Moto G settles for a measly 1GB of RAM with 8GB of storage but now it gets an additional high-spec option of 2GB RAM with 16GB of storage. If that’s not enough, there’s also a microSD slot that accepts up to 32GB of extra storage.

The Moto G has always been mediocre when it comes to photography but this time it receives an upgraded 13MP f/2.0 shooter that supports Auto HDR, Slow Mo and it records full HD videos. For better lighting it is assisted by dual-tone LED flash and you can even launch the camera app instantly by just simply twisting your wrist. Knowing that people love taking selfies, the front camera gets a more up to date 5MP f/2.2 shooter with a wide 72 degree field of view.

Powering the device is a larger 2,470mAh capacity battery which they say is enough to pull through 24 hours of use in a single charge. It supports 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, WiFi 802.11n and if you’re wondering, it still doesn’t support NFC. At time of release, it runs on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and it will definitely receives Android M once it is available. The Moto G is available in both Black and White colours but you can personalise your device with a colourful variety of Motorola Shells.
