Meizu announce its MX5 flagship. Featuring a larger 5.5″ display and unibody metal design

It looks like a busy day in China as Meizu has announced its latest flagship, the MX5. Replacing the previous Meizu MX4 that came with an odd 5.36″ 1920×1152 pixel resolution IPS display, the Meizu MX5 gets a larger 5.5″ AMOLED screen that does a more conventional Full HD resolution of 1920×1080. The front looks similar with its MX4 Pro as it gets a home button that doubles up as a one-touch fingerprint scanner.

The MX5 now comes with a metal unibody design which is more sturdy compared to the current MX4 that has a removable plastic back cover. Despite having more metal, the MX5 is only slightly heavier at 149g (MX4: 147g) and it manages to trim its thickness down to just 7.6mm (MX4: 8.9mm).

Under the hood, it gets a MediaTek Helio X10 2.2GHz Octa-Core processor that’s mated to 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM, similar to the HTC One M9+. With the absence of a removable back cover, the sides feature a flush tray slot that holds two SIM cards with both supporting 4G LTE. Like its predecessor, there’s no microSD expansion slot available. Keeping its lights on is a 3,150mAh capacity battery and it supports fast charging as well. Meizu claims that the MX5 can be juiced up to 25% in 10 minutes and up to 60% in 40 minutes.

The main camera appears to be unchanged from its predecessor with a 20.7MP f/2.2 main camera with twin LED lights but this time it is improved with a 6 element lens and a new laser auto focus element that’s similar to the LG G3. This allows the MX5 to focus quicker at a claimed 0.2 seconds. For better selfies, the front gets a 5MP f/2.0 camera that’s enhanced with smart selfie features. Out of the box, it runs on Flyme 4.5 which is a heavily skinned UI based on Android which is radically different from other devices. The Meizu MX5 comes in 3 storage capacities with the base 16GB model priced at 1,799 CNY (about RM1,093). Meanwhile the 32GB and 64GB models are priced at 1,999 CNY (about RM1,215) and 2,399 CNY (about RM1,458) respectively.
