The R7 and R7 Plus are now official. Can OPPO make a thin phone with substance?

With OPPO’s latest smartphone just launching today in China, the long awaited ultra-slim OPPO R7 phones have finally made a landing, just in time for their 10th anniversary. This is seen as a successor to its current OPPO R5 which stands as their thinnest smart phone offering at only 4.85mm.

Keeping to the tradition of being super slim, the OPPO R7 is not the thinnest of the lot but at 6.3mm it is still quite remarkable for what it is packing on the inside. Like most new devices launched recently, the OPPO R7 doesn’t just come in one but two sizes with the addition of its R7 Plus model.

Under the hood the device sports a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor mated to 3GB RAM as well as 16GB expandable storage. The device will have 4G connectivity and a non-removable 2,320mAh battery. The display is a 5 inch Full HD 1080p AMOLED display with 2.5D glass with smoothed out edges much like what is on the iPhone 6. Both phones will be sporting ColourOS 2.1 that’s still based on Android 4.4 KitKat, which is very dated for new device in this day and age. Despite that, OPPO claims that the new enhanced version offers faster boot time and app loading.

The device has a 8 megapixel front snapper with a wide 84-degree viewing angle as well as a 13 megapixel rear camera sporting a ISOCELL CMOS sensor paired with a Schneider-Kreuznach designed lens. OPPO claims that the camera is capable of Phase Detection Auto Focus in 0.1 seconds and initiates 30% faster than other devices, making it easy to capture fast moving subjects.

It is also equipped with VOOC Flash charging that allows you to charge from 0 to 75% in just 30 minutes and a mere 5 minutes charge is enough to provide two hours of talktime. The OPPO R7 is a dual-SIM device but if you need to expand more storage, the 2nd slot can be used for microSD.

As for the OPPO R7 Plus it also has 3GB RAM but it gets a larger 32GB storage on-board. Being a bigger device, is gets a huge 4,100mAh battery with VOOC charging as well. The display will be a 6 inch Full HD 1080p AMOLED display and it uses a 4 colour RGBW 13MP camera much like the Huawei P8 that’s assisted with dual LED flash. According to OPPO, the the 4 colour set up would improve picture brightness while reducing noise. The R7 Plus is also home to a fingerprint scanner that’s located at the back. With the extra bulk, the R7 Plus is thicker at 7.75mm and it weighs 203 grams. Strangely, the OPPO R7 Plus is listed to run on ColorOS 2.1 with Android 5.1. Another difference between the 2 models is that the R7 has capacitive front buttons while the R7 Plus opts for on-screen buttons instead.

The 5″ OPPO R7 will be retailing for 2499 CNY (about RM 1457) while the 6″ OPPO R7 Plus at 2999 CNY (about RM 1749). For more info, you can check out the respective OPPO R7 and OPPO R7 Plus product pages.
