The Galaxy S series is now in its 6th year and Samsung has come a long way since its original Galaxy S launched in 2010. At the time, it had set a new standard for a high-end Android flagship with a thin design, incredible Super AMOLED display and top notch internals.
No doubt the past few Galaxy S flagships have gotten better in hardware but its plastic build is not doing much justice to its capable performance. They have tried to make their smart phones feel more upmarket with the use of chrome and faux leather finishing, but that’s simply not enough to deliver a true premium feeling device.
With today’s users demanding for more, Samsung has gone back to the drawing board for its latest Galaxy S6 flagship. Called as Project Zero, the new model was built from the ground up aspiring to create what’s next now and hopefully to set a new standard of smart phone design. The exterior has to be as top notch to reflect its new advancements on the inside.
To deliver a premium experience, the first contact with the device is crucial. On the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, they have went with glass and metal as their core materials. For a more cutting edge design, the Galaxy S6 edge stands out as the world’s first device to feature a dual curve display. To create this is not an easy task and Samsung has used a unique 3D Thermoforming technology to create a double curve design for its front panel.
Meanwhile for its back panel, the use of glass isn’t entirely new. To allow the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge stand out, they have used a nano-thin multi coating process to give its back panels a vibrant and dynamic finish. This creates an illusion of flowing metal and the way it reflects natural light is stunning at various angles.
The Gold Platinum variant appears more vibrant than other typical gold smart phones while the Emerald Green colour is unique which you can’t find on any other premium device.
For a comfortable and an upmarket feel, the latest flagship uses a sleek metal frame which undergoes diamond cutting and anodizing processes for a more refined feel. The result is a surrounding frame that’s smooth to touch and it feels reassuring to hold in the hands. The frames are not the same across the range as each colour will get a different shade of colour for a unique look.
To protect the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge from daily scuffs and bumps, Samsung has used the latest Gorilla Glass 4 which is thinner, lighter and more damage resistant than its predecessors. For its body, a high strength aluminium that’s similarly used for aircrafts and automobile is being used. Samsung claims that it is 1.5X stronger and 1.2X more scratch resistant than other aluminium used on other smart phones today.
Of course, usability isn’t sacrificed for beauty entirely. They have retained its right side mounted power button for better single handed use while its volume controls are placed conveniently on the left with individual up and down buttons. For greater sound, the speaker grill has been repositioned to the bottom, which produces 1.5X louder sound than the previous Galaxy S5.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge will be available in Malaysia on 17th April 2015. The Galaxy S6 is available in White Pearl, Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum and Blue Topaz, while the Galaxy S6 edge comes in White Pearl, Black Sapphire, Gold Platinium and Green Emerald.
