Xiaomi gets more affordable with the Redmi 2A

As Xiaomi celebrates its 5th anniversary, they have just announced a couple of new products ranging from smart phones, TVs and smart appliances. As rumoured earlier, Xiaomi is going for an even affordable smart phone by introducing the Redmi 2A. Essentially this is the same device as the current Redmi 2 but it carries an even lower price tag of 599 CNY (about RM357).

If ordered on 8th April (one day only), the Redmi 2A is offered at an even lower 499 CNY price tag which is about RM297. That’s quite a lot of savings considering the standard Redmi 2 is priced at 699 CNY which is currently sold at RM449 in Malaysia.

So what’s the difference between this and the current Redmi 2? While it looks the same externally, the Redmi 2A runs on a Leadcore L1860C processor with 4+1-core clocked at 1.5GHz. There’s no performance figures yet but it probably would be a notch below the Quad-Core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 410 processor that’s powering the standard Redmi 2. It is also mated to 1GB of RAM and 8GB of on-board storage. It also gets 8MP 5-elements lens main camera and a front facing 2MP camera. Keeping the lights on is a 2,200mAh capacity battery.

Connectivity wise it is similar with dual-SIM slots with the support for 4G LTE. Before you get excited, do note that the Redmi 2A only supports China’s 4G TD-LTE and 3G in TD-SCDMA bands.
