The Samsung Galaxy S6’s battery lags behind its predecessor

At a extremely skinny 6.8mm thin, the Samsung Galaxy S6 is one of the thinnest devices on the market. Unfortunately, such a slim figure comes with a price; there isn’t space to fit everything and the component that usually needs the most space is the battery.

The smartphone sports a 2,550 mAh battery, which is a fair bit smaller than the Samsung Galaxy S5‘s battery of 2800mAh, but has to keep a 1440 x 2560 Quad HD super AMOLED display going for as long as it can.

According to PhoneArena’s custom battery life test that imitates a typical person’s daily usage, the Galaxy S6 manages to run for 7 hours and 14 minutes, which falls short by 24 minutes compared to it’s predecessor. The Samsung Galaxy S5 on the other hand lasted for 7 hours and 38 minutes, and that’s with a bigger battery and it runs on a lower Full HD resolution display. Juicing up the Galaxy S6 from 0 to 100 takes just 78 minutes, which is the fastest in the comparison.

Interestingly, the Galaxy S6 edge managed to pull more than half an hour extra of usage time despite only having a (2,600mAh) battery capacity 50mAh larger than the Galaxy S6.

Bear in mind that the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge have better processors, RAM and a much higher resolution than the Galaxy S5; which sounds like a recipe for disaster but Samsung reckons it would last just as long as the Galaxy S5. This is probably due to Samsung’s power efficiency thanks to the smaller 14nm processor process and a energy saving but blazing fast UFS 2.0 storage

Another advantage of the Galaxy S6 is the support for fast charging that does 0-50% in 30 minutes. Also a welcome feature is native wireless charging support where you can juice up without pesky wires.

At any rate the Samsung Galaxy S6 is still ahead of the pack compared to it’s competitors the HTC One M9, LG G3 and both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
