Google could introduce its own VPN to secure Open WiFi connections

It’s always tempting to hit that connect button at Cafes offering Free WiFi. However such connections could put your data at risk especially while doing online banking.

To keep your internet traffic secured, Google appears to be taking a step forward with a Google VPN of its own. Someone has done a little tinkering with the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop on a Nexus 6, and has found a new “Google Connectivity Services” on it.

At the moment, it doesn’t appear to work but it looks like this would run a VPN service (presumably free of charge) via Google each time you’re connected to an open WiFi connection. As it is still early, we are not sure if this will be final but the presence of such service does come as a surprise. Without an official announcement, this is still a work in progress and Google might just scrap it quietly later. If it does happen, it would certainly give users a greater peace of mind while utilising Free WiFi hotspots. Another question mark is whether this would be exclusive to Nexus devices and if they would extend it to all Android devices running on the latest Lollipop version.
