Jolla introduces its own tablet driven by crowdsourcing

Jolla which is known for its Sailfish OS has finally introduced its very own tablet. Called simply as the Jolla Tablet, it won’t be going on sale like your typical digital slab. Instead, they are making this as the world’s first crowdsource tablet by putting it on Indiegogo with a goal of getting US$380,000 worth of funds in 21 days.

So far the response has been tremendously good. Within hours of its announcement, they have already exceeded their goal with over $480,000 collected so far. The first 2,000 early bird units have been snapped up and if you’re interested, you can back it up for US$204 (about RM687), excluding US$20 for shipping. If you’re new to Jolla, they are basically an independent team in Finland that was founded by former Nokia employees that worked on the MeeGo project (Remember the Nokia N9?).

Hardware wise, the Jolla Tablet shares a couple of similarities to the recently announced Nokia N1. It gets a 7.9″ display that pushes 2048×1536 and powering the device is also a Quad-Core Intel Atom processor but clocked at a lower 1.8GHz. There’s 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage which can be expanded via microSD (which is lacking on N1). In the imaging department, it gets a 5MP camera capable of shooting Full HD 1080p videos at 60fps and mounted at the front is a 2MP camera.

For connectivity, it has WiFi supporting 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS. With a 4,300mAh battery, the Jolla Tablet weighs 384g and has a thickness of 8.3mm. In terms of apps, not to worry as Sailfish OS supports Android apps and you can discover more through its Jolla Store and other 3rd party Android market appstores.

If you’re interested, you can back this tablet over at Indiegogo.
