By the numbers: iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus compared with other flagship smart phones

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are now official with a 4.7″ and 5.5″ display. Although they have expanded beyond its former 4.0″ screen size on the iPhone 5/5S, the new iPhone models are actually thinner at 6.9mm (iPhone 6) and 7.1mm (iPhone 6 Plus) respectively.

Considering the announcement came right after last week’s IFA 2014, we have compared the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus hardware specs and dimensions with other flagship devices including the new Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge, Galaxy Alpha, Sony Xperia Z3, Huawei Ascend Mate 7 and other notable flagship smart phones in the market today.

For starters, the display on the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus has increased in resolution which Apple is calling it Retina HD display. Despite its fancy naming, the iPhone 6 with its 1334×750 pixels resolution still delivers the same 326ppi (pixels per inch) density since Retina Display was introducing with iPhone 4. Meanwhile, the iPhone 6 Plus joins the Full HD resolution club and it pushes 401ppi with its 5.5″ display.

Both iPhones pack higher battery capacities with the iPhone 6 having a 1,810mAh (yet to be confirmed) unit, while the Plus sized version is said to have a larger 2,915mAh capacity. What’s impressive is they managed to keep the device super slim but it does put on weight at 129g on the iPhone 6 and a whopping 172g on the iPhone 6 Plus. As comparison, the Galaxy Note 3 with its 5.7″ Full HD screen weighs 168g, while the new Note 4 is heavier at 176g. In terms of slimness, the Galaxy Alpha is slightly thinner and lighter than the iPhone 6 by 0.2mm and 14g respectively.

Camera wise, Apple still maintains a 8MP f/2.2 main shooter and a front facing 1.2MP camera. The sensor size is likely to be the same as the iPhone 5S as it has a pixel size of 1.5 microns. For the iPhone 6 Plus, it has an added advantage with Optical Image Stabilisation, which is a first for Apple and it is a feature that’s also included on the latest Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge. However the maximum video recording is still limited at Full HD 1080p resolution albeit at 60fps. For slow-mo videos, it is now capable of recording up to 240fps and Panorama shots can produce images up to 43MP in size. Another first for Apple is the inclusion of NFC, which used along with its TouchID recognition for its new Apple Pay system.

So if you’re wondering how much would it cost when it comes to Malaysia? Be prepared to fork out a lot of money based on what Apple in Singapore is pricing them right now. The iPhone 6 would likely to follow the iPhone 5S prices when it was launched locally which would hover around the RM2,400-RM2,500 marker. Meanwhile the iPhone 6 Plus would be expected to be priced starting around RM2,700-2,800, which is quite a lot to pay for a 5.5″ phablet.
