VIDEO: Huawei Honor 3C Review

The Huawei Honor 3C is popular for its generous offering in a smart phone that’s priced below RM600. Priced at RM499, it gets a decent sized 5″ display that does HD 720p resolution, a quad-core 1.3GHz processor and a generous serving of 2GB RAM.

On-board it is provided with 8GB of on-board storage, a microSD slot and a 2,300mAh capacity battery which is huge for a device in this price range. Being a dual-SIM device, it lets you switch between 2 operators for cheaper calls, sms or data with both lines on standby.

Despite being an entry-level priced device, the Honor 3C packs a number of interesting features. We particularly liked the gesture controls where you can double tap to wake and there’s even a shortcut function to load selected apps by swiping from the screen edges while the display is asleep. The battery life has been pretty good as well with dual-SIM cards in use. In its default “Smart” setting, we managed to push 14 hours of usage which includes 4 hours of on-screen time. There’s also a Phone Manager which helps to optimise your phone’s performance, memory, storage and data usage.

During our usage, we are a little annoyed that the Honor 3C doesn’t come with illuminated keys at the bottom of the device. If you are moving from other smart phone brands, it might take a while to get used with the Back, Home and Menu button layout on the Honor 3C and the icons are very hard to notice even under normal lighting. This is worse for first time users in the dark.

While the Honor 3C does the basic day to day smart phone usage pretty well, the gaming and video performance could have been better. Playing videos on the YouTube or Instagram app isn’t smooth and the audio turns out to be out of sync. Weirdly, it plays acceptably well on the YouTube Mobile website. Hopefully Huawei will address these performance issues with a software updates as it is simply not acceptable to have such experience especially on a quad-core device.
