Samsung reveals Galaxy Camera 2 with sleeker design and updated hardware

As we roll into 2014, Samsung has started the year by revealing the Galaxy Camera 2, the successor of its first ever Android powered Galaxy Camera. At first glance, the new Galaxy Camera 2 looks grown up with a rugged body texture and the use of metal looking materials. Dimension wise, the new Galaxy Camera 2 is slightly bigger by a couple of millimeters in width, height and thickness however it is lighter than the previous model at 283 grams (Galaxy Camera: 300 grams).

As expected, the hardware is being updated with a Quad-core 1.6GHz processor with 2GB of RAM and a larger 8GB of storage on-board which unfortunately only 2.8GB is usable. There’s a micro-SD slot which accepts cards up to 64GB of storage and the battery capacity has also increased to 2,000mAh. As comparison, last year’s Galaxy Camera runs on a 1.4GHz quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM , 4GB of storage and a smaller 1,650mAh capacity battery. The touch screen at the back remains unchanged with a 4.8″ Super Clear LCD that does 1280×720, pushing a pixel density of 306ppi. Out of the box, it runs on the current Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with the usual custom Touch Wiz interface

With photography as its main duty, the Galaxy Camera 2 appears to have the same 1/2.3″ BSI sensor that shoots 16MP pictures and is mated with a similar a 21X Optical Zoom. For illumination, it uses a pop-up Xenon Flash lamp which is similar as the previous model. Another new addition is NFC which allows ease of sharing by tapping compatible devices together. In terms of video, it retains the same Full HD 1080p recording at 30 fps and 720p recording at 60 fps. Overall, it is surprising that Samsung seems to have upgraded everything except for its imaging capabilities. With 4K being the upcoming trend, it is a pity that the Galaxy Camera 2 has been left out considering its current flagship Galaxy Note 3 being able to do so.

Unlike the original Galaxy Camera, the new Galaxy Camera 2 seems to be WiFi only as it lacks a SIM slot for 3G and 4G connectivity. Perhaps they could be releasing a 4G LTE version of the Galaxy Camera at a much later phase. When the first Galaxy Camera was launched in Malaysia last year, it was priced at RM1,899 with 3G HSPA+ connectivity.
