Next generation USB to be smaller & works in either side up

Faster transfers are crucial especially when file sizes are getting bigger. With emergence of high resolution 4K video, we are starting to see devices such as the Galaxy Note 3 featuring a rather large micro USB 3.0 cable as shown above. This seems to be taking a step back in terms of convenience when things are supposed to get smaller.

Now a new USB connector that’s called USB Type C aims to offer high speed USB 3.0 connectivity but yet maintain a smaller connector head. Without offering any illustration, the Type C connector would be an all new design that’s similar in size with the current micro USB (USB 2.0 Micro-B) and it also offers uni-directional connectivity. This means you can plug the cable whichever way without worrying which side is up, similar to the current iPhone 5/5S Lighting Cable.

The new connector standard is said to be scaleable, with potential to be the single standard to deliver data, power and video across multiple devices. The specification is expected to be finalised sometime in mid 2014 and realistically it might take a while before it becomes a de facto standard across new devices.
