Huawei pulled out at the stops at this year’s CES with two of the most outrageous smartphones we’ve seen. Say hello to the 6.1-inch Ascend Mate and the 5-inch Ascend D2.

With a screen that eclipses all other smartphone currently on sale, Huawei is proud to give the Ascend Mate the distinction of the largest smartphone in the world. The Mate features a 6.1-inch Gorilla Glass screen and measures over half a foot (6.5 inches) tall (where were you going to put that, big boy?). Its posher little sibling, the flagship Ascend D2, is no midget either squaring up at 5.5 inches tall with a with a 5-inch LCD panel also with Gorilla Glass.

The most interesting difference between two phones is their pixel resolutions. The D2’s 5-inch screen sports a full HD 1920×1080 resolution with a pixel density of 440 PPI. In comparison, the massive Mate’s 6.1-inch screen’s resolution is a paltry (considering its large screen size) 1280×720 pixels producing only 240 PPI – obviously a huge trade-off.

Aside from the different screen specifications, the two devices are different in a few other key areas as well:

Cameras: the massive Mate has a 8MP rear-facing camera, and a 1.0-megapixel HD front-facing camera, whereas the D2 has a much fancier 13MP backside illuminated (BSI) camera, and a 1.3-megapixel HD front-facing camera that promises to give better low light performance. Both devices are capable of shooting 1080 video.

Standby times: Huawei really took the adage “go big or go home adage” to heart with both large devices packing extra large batteries. The massive Mate is endowed with a super-huge 4,050mAh battery — the largest we’ve seen on a smartphone — giving it a claimed standby time of up to 9 days. The D2 is no less impressive 3,000mAh power pack and a claimed standby time of up to 6 days.

Dust and water resistance: Huawei says the D2 is water resistant with an Ingress Protection (IPX) rating of “5/4”, which means that the device is virtually dust proof and is resistant to water splashes. The Ascend Mate on the other hand is neither.

Both devices run Android 4.1 and feature a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor mated to 2GB of RAM.

There has been no specific on when these phones will be available in Malaysia. We’ll let you know when we know.
