Apple whoops BB’s ass in global smartphone market share

It’s a sad day for BlackBerry fans as a report from Strategy Analysis revealed that Apple has overtaken RIM for second place in worldwide smart phone share. Leading the pack however is still Symbian (read Nokia) with close to 27 million devices in Q3 of 2010 while global smartphone shipments reached 77 million units in the same period.

According to the report, the iPhone sold 14.1 million phones, while RIM shipped 12.1 million. For RIM, the news gets worse, as the company dropped 16.1 percent in sales from the previous quarter.

If we were the top exec of RIM we’d be really worried right about now considering the fact that RIM’s saviour for the BlackBerry brand — the Torch — didn’t really capture the market share that it had hoped for.

Event in it’s latest incarnation — the BlackBerry 6 — RIM is struggling to stay competitive with the more social and app friendly mobile OS from Apple and Google. If RIM wants to stay in the game they had better come up with something relevant and fast.
