As part of its network expansion exercise, U Mobile has just rolled out its first ever 4G LTE-Advanced site in Malaysia. LTE-Advanced or also known as 4G+ offers faster speeds than conventional 4G. In real life usage, this would enable download speeds beyond 100Mbps which is made possible through carrier aggregation.

Instead of launching in key market centres like the Klang Valley, U Mobile’s first 4G LTE Advanced site was switched on in Kota Belud, Sabah. The launch event was witnessed by Minister of Communications and Multimedia, YB Senator Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Salleh Tun Said Keruak. U Mobile recently has embarked on a network expansion exercise to cover East Malaysia with their own 4G network. At the moment, they had to rely heavily on their domestic roaming partner, Maxis for 2G/3G coverage where U Mobile isn’t available.

So what’s the speed like? U Mobile CEO, Wong Heang Tuck, had shown a speedtest result delivering 127.9Mbps download and 13.82Mbps upload as pictured above.

Among the big 4 telcos, U Mobile is still the underdog when it comes to 4G coverage but they are rather competitive in telco plans while offering new breakthroughs like WiFi Calling and unlimited video streaming. For folks in Peninsular Malaysia, there’s no mention when will U Mobile upgrade their existing 4G sites to LTE-Advanced.
