BMW has officially unveiled the first-ever BMW iX4, a fully electric SUV coupe that serves as the sportier sibling to the BMW iX3.

It features a sleeker design with a sloping roofline while featuring BMW’s latest Neue Klasse technologies including its Gen6 eDrive platform.

The new BMW iX4 50 xDrive offers up to 828km of WLTP-rated driving range, while the range-topping iX4 M60 xDrive produces up to 450kW (603hp).

Interestingly, the iX4 offers slightly more range than the iX3 despite sharing the same battery and motor.

BMW iX4 gets a sportier coupe design

While the BMW iX3 takes the form of a conventional SUV, the new iX4 features a sloping roofline, giving it a sportier coupe-like silhouette.

Up front, the iX4 retains BMW’s latest Neue Klasse SUV design language, where its skinnier kidney grille and twin headlights are integrated into a single graphic element.

At the rear, the iX4 features slim horizontal tail lights, a pronounced rear spoiler with an integrated brake light and a black lower diffuser. The iX4 M60 xDrive gets a more aggressive appearance with a model-specific rear spoiler and additional M design elements.

Since both the iX3 and iX4 share the same dedicated EV platform, both EVs have identical lengths, widths and wheelbases, measuring 4,782mm long, 1,895mm wide and with a 2,897mm wheelbase. However, the iX4 sits 40mm lower than the iX3 with a height of 1,595mm tall. The ground clearer of the iX4 is also 3mm lower at 173mm.

The sleeker profile also gives the iX4 a lower drag coefficient of 0.23 compared to 0.24 for the iX3. As a result, it gets slightly more range than the iX3.

However, the sportier design comes with some sacrifices in practicality. The iX4 has 490 litres of boot space, which is 30 litres less than the iX3. With the rear seats folded, the iX4 offers 1,600 litres versus the iX3’s 1,750 litres. Both models retain a 58-litre frunk under the bonnet.

The M Sport package comes as standard across the iX4 range, which includes 20-inch M light-alloy wheels and M Sport brakes with blue callipers. Meanwhile, the iX4 M60 xDrive gets 21-inch wheels as standard, while 22-inch wheels are available as an option.

Other exterior features include a large panoramic glass roof with climate comfort glazing, which comes as standard.

BMW iX4 50 xDrive offers up to 828km range

Like the new BMW iX3, the iX4 is built around BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, featuring cylindrical battery cells, an 800V electrical architecture and bidirectional charging capability.

The BMW iX4 50 xDrive gets a dual-motor AWD setup producing 345kW (462hp) and 645Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds and has a top speed of 210km/h.

Powering the iX4 50 xDrive is a 108.7kWh usable battery, which offers a WLTP-rated driving range of up to 828km. That’s an extra 23km of maximum rated range compared to the equivalent iX3 variant.

Interestingly, the iX4 50 xDrive is also 20kg heavier, with a DIN kerb weight of 2,305kg compared to 2,285kg for the iX3 50 xDrive.

Similar to the iX3, the iX4 50 xDrive supports DC fast charging at up to 400kW. According to BMW, a 10-minute top-up can add up to 387km of WLTP-rated range, while a 10-80% charge takes about 21 minutes. For AC Charging it supports 11kW with the option to upgrade to 22kW.

BMW also has a more “entry-level” BMW iX4 40 xDrive. It still gets a dual-motor AWD, producing 275kW (369hp) and 520Nm of torque capable of doing 0-100km in 5.6 seconds.

The battery is slightly smaller at 82.6kWh (usable) and it has a WLTP-rated range of 639km. The iX4 40 xDrive supports up to 300kW DC fast charging which also takes 21 minutes to charge from 10-80%.

BMW iX4 M60 xDrive produces up to 603hp

For those looking for more performance, BMW is also introducing the iX4 M60 xDrive as the range-topping M Performance variant.

The iX4 M60 xDrive gets a dual-motor AWD setup producing up to 450kW (603hp) and 875Nm of torque.

BMW claims it can accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 3.9 seconds before reaching an electronically limited top speed of 240km/h. Despite the additional performance, it still offers a maximum WLTP-rated driving range of up to 777km.

To enhance its handling, the M60 comes with adaptive M suspension as standard, which includes electronically controlled shock absorbers and sport steering with a variable steering ratio.

It also gets an electronically controlled M locking differential at the rear axle, along with dedicated M Sport and M Sport Plus driving modes.

Visually, the M60 stands out with M Yellow Lights, black BMW kidney M Shadowline trim and unique front and rear light signatures.

BMW Panoramic iDrive with 17.9-inch display

BMW iX4 50 xDrive Interior

Inside, the BMW iX4 adopts the same Neue Klasse interior design as the new iX3, with a strong emphasis on digital displays and a minimalist dashboard.

The BMW Panoramic iDrive system consists of a full-width BMW Panoramic Vision display positioned along the lower section of the windscreen, a BMW 3D Head-Up Display and a 17.9-inch central touchscreen running BMW Operating System X.

The iX4 also gets BMW’s Heart of Joy central control computer, which integrates drivetrain and driving dynamics functions. According to BMW, the system processes control inputs up to 10 times faster than its previous systems.

For the seats, the iX4 comes with electrically adjustable front seats with memory, while the rear seats feature a 40:20:40 split-folding configuration.

As standard, the iX4 gets a seven-speaker audio system with 205W output. The iX4 M60 xDrive comes equipped with a 13-speaker 430W Harman Kardon sound system with Dolby Atmos, which is also available as an option for other variants.

For driver assistance, the iX4 supports BMW’s Motorway Assistant, which allows hands-free driving at speeds of up to 130km/h on approved routes in supported countries. However, the availability of this feature depends on the market.

The BMW iX4 is set to be released in March 2027 and so far there’s no word of its availability for Malaysia.
