Prasarana Malaysia’s subsidiary, Rapid Bus, has begun testing electric buses across its Rapid KL and Rapid Penang networks. These tests serve as preparation for a wider deployment of EV buses into the Rapid Bus fleet over the coming years.
Besides route testing, Rapid Bus stated that it is also setting up the necessary supporting ecosystem for the new EV buses. This includes charging infrastructure, maintenance facilities, technical training, and related operational requirements.

Back in 2023, Rapid Bus publicly said that it is aiming to electrify 30% of its fleet by 2030, before having a 100% electric fleet by 2037.
Rapid Bus using Sunway BRT Line to benchmark new buses

Over in the Klang Valley, Rapid Bus is currently testing five Foton electric buses on the Sunway BRT line. However, it remains unclear whether these Foton buses will take over the mantle from the BYD buses that have been serving the BRT line since it opened back in 2015.
The trial is meant to evaluate real-world performance metrics—including energy efficiency, battery performance, driving range, and charging systems—alongside passenger comfort, ride smoothness, and cabin noise levels.
“Through the ongoing tests on the BRT Sunway route, we can evaluate bus performance under real operational conditions and gather the necessary data before a wider rollout. At the same time, we want to ensure passengers continue to enjoy services that are safe, comfortable, and reliable,” — Syahrul Azmir Ahmad Zaki, CEO, Rapid Bus.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke previously said that Rapid Bus is set to receive 250 new EV buses, with 175 of them earmarked for the Rapid KL network. These buses are expected to arrive in Malaysia by March 2027.
Rapid Penang to receive 240 new electric buses

Up north, Rapid Bus is following suit by conducting real-world test drive sessions within the Rapid Penang network. Unlike in Sunway, the test in Penang will only last for two days, from 6 to 7 October 2026.
In addition, Rapid Bus has deployed two distinct EV buses from different manufacturers directly onto public roads to assess route suitability and local traffic conditions. These include a 12-meter Foton electric bus and an 8.25-meter EV bus from Golden Dragon.

The first phase of the Rapid Penang EV bus deployment will involve 75 units, which will be rolled out in stages through March 2027. Overall, Penang is set to receive 240 EV buses in total.
