U Mobile ULTRA5G: Fast 5G That Actually Works Indoors

This post is brought to you by U Mobile.

We’ve all been there: your phone proudly displays the 5G icon, but the moment you walk into a shopping mall or office building, your data grinds to a halt. Why does your 5G suddenly feel like 3G indoors? It’s because standard, high-frequency 5G signals struggle to blast through dense concrete, thick walls, and glass.

But not all 5G networks are built the same. Overcoming this “great indoors” challenge is exactly what U Mobile’s new, independent ULTRA5G network is designed to do. And you don’t just have to take our word for it. A recent report by OpenSignal, an independent mobile network analytics firm, proves that U Mobile is actively reshaping the rules of 5G connectivity in Malaysia.

A Shift Away from Wholesale 5G, and Toward Network Differentiation

For years, Malaysia’s 5G rollout relied on a single wholesale network model led by Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB). However, everything changed when U Mobile transitioned to its own independent network, backed by Malaysia’s second 5G licence in late 2024.

This independence allowed U Mobile to stop sharing the “highway” and start building its own. By deploying their own infrastructure with a strategic combination of low- and mid-band spectrum, U Mobile directly tackled the signal penetration issues that plague high-frequency 5G. The result? A network built specifically to target high-traffic indoor environments where the vast majority of our daily data usage actually occurs.

Since the transition, U Mobile has pulled away from the pack. Over a 12-month period, OpenSignal recorded a massive 51% improvement in U Mobile’s 5G download speeds and a 27% jump in upload speeds. Today, their 5G download speeds are roughly two-thirds higher than their competitors.

Conquering the “Great Indoors”

Speed is great, but consistency is king, especially indoors. Whether you are loading an eWallet at a checkout counter, searching a directory, or trying to make a video call from a crowded food court, dead zones are incredibly frustrating.

OpenSignal’s data reveals a clear indoor performance advantage for U Mobile. Users on the ULTRA5G network are twice as likely to experience excellent 5G signal strength (≥-85dBm) indoors compared to users on other Malaysian networks.

Even more impressively, only 8% of U Mobile’s indoor readings fall into the “Weak” or “Dead Zone” categories. To put that into perspective, the rate of dead zones on competing networks is a staggering 24%, roughly three times worse. U Mobile has effectively brought its strong outdoor network performance indoors.

This reliability shines brightest in dense, high-traffic areas. At major hubs like Pavilion KL and Sunway Pyramid, U Mobile’s 5G Consistent Quality scored above 90%, far exceeding the sub-80% average of other local operators. This metric proves that ULTRA5G users aren’t just getting connected; they are avoiding the sluggish app loading, frozen video calls, and timed-out mobile payments that plague congested indoor areas.

Real-World Performance in High-Traffic Locations

While the analytics look great on paper, what does this independent network actually feel like in real-world use? To see if OpenSignal’s data holds up, we hit the streets of Kuala Lumpur to run our own on-the-ground comparative speed tests, and the results painted a very clear picture.

Even outdoors in the bustling Bukit Bintang city centre, our tests showed U Mobile clocking blistering download speeds of up to 570Mbps, significantly outperforming Telco A at 173Mbps and Telco B at 109Mbps. But the real magic happened when we stepped inside:

  • Wisma Cosway (Indoors): We saw U Mobile ULTRA5G achieve an impressive speed of 818Mbps download and 147Mbps upload. In the same spot, our devices on Telco A and Telco B defaulted to 4G+, pulling roughly 100Mbps to 110 Mbps, respectively.
  • Pavilion KL (Indoors): Deep inside the mall, U Mobile ULTRA5G still delivered up to 781Mbps download speeds on our tests. Meanwhile, Telco A lagged at 200Mbps, and Telco B dropped to just 24Mbps on 4G.

The New Standard for Everyday 5G Use

U Mobile’s ULTRA5G story is not just about launching a new network. It is about redefining what good 5G should look like in the places where people actually use it.

OpenSignal’s report suggests that the operator’s strategy is delivering more than faster speeds. It is improving consistency, strengthening indoor performance and raising the quality of the experience in the busiest environments across Malaysia.

That is important because the future of 5G will not be judged only by how fast it can go outdoors in ideal conditions. It will increasingly be measured by how well it performs in the real world: inside malls, stations, offices and city centres, where reliability often matters more than theory.

And on that front, U Mobile ULTRA5G appears to be building a clear advantage.
