A long time coming, the GWM Wey G9 PHEV is finally available in Malaysia. The 7-seater premium MPV was originally previewed in Malaysia during the KL International Mobility Show 2024, although the unit that was shown at that time was called Wey 80 and featured an older exterior design with a left-hand drive (LHD) setup.
Fast forward to today, the Wey G9 with right-hand drive (RHD) setup for the Malaysian market is locally assembled (CKD) at EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB) plant in Melaka with 40.05% localised components. Not only that, but the Malaysian CKD unit has also been exported to Thailand, with additional ASEAN markets to be covered very soon.

GWM Wey G9 PHEV Malaysia Quick Specs

The Hi4 Hybrid Technology on the new all-wheel drive (AWD) MPV features a front-mounted 148hp (110kW) 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 240Nm of torque, paired to a 107hp (80kW) electric motor that also produces 170Nm of torque. There is also a rear-mounted 181hp (135kW) electric motor with 232Nm of torque.
Together, they can deliver a maximum power output of 436hp (325kW) with a maximum torque of 642Nm. GWM claimed that the Wey G9 can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.7 seconds and also has a top speed of 190km/h.

In terms of energy, the Wey G9 relies on a 44.2kWh NMC ternary lithium battery pack and a 58L fuel tank. The MPV comes standard with 6.6kW AC charging capability, which allows its high-voltage battery to be charged from 15% to 100% in 6.5 hours.
At the same time, the Wey G9 also supports DC charging speed of up to 60kW, which helps cut the 30% to 80% charging time to 26 minutes. In addition to that, the MPV also comes with a 3.3kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) feature that allows owners to power up external electrical appliances.

Range-wise, the Wey G9 offers an NEDC-rated pure electric range of 170km, which is approximately 145km in WLTP. GWM claimed that the MPV can deliver a combined range of up to 1,000km in NEDC or approximately 850km WLTP.
Being a 5,050mm long, 1,985mm wide, and 1,900mm tall MPV, the Wey G9 is longer and wider than the staple choices of taukeh, VVIP, and politicians – Toyota Alphard and Vellfire. However, GWM’s offering is still shorter than its closest PHEV rival, the GAC M8.

Other fully electric premium MPVs that are currently in our market, such as Denza D9, Maxus MIFA 9, XPeng X9 and Zeekr 009, are also slightly longer than the Wey G9. Dimensions aside, GWM said that the new PHEV can provide 233L of luggage space when the rear seats are up, but can be expanded up to 1725L.
The MPV also features MacPherson strut suspension on the front, while there is also multi-link suspension on the rear. While the Wey G9 does not come with air suspension, several technologies, such as Intelligent Torque Vectoring Control (iTVC), Frequency Response Damper (FRD), and Hydraulic Rebound Stop (HRS) helped provide stability and comfort to the MPV.

When it comes to tyres, it’s great to see that GWM didn’t choose some random brands for the Wey G9. Specifically, the company has opted for Michelin Primacy 5 Energy 245/50 tyres for the MPV’s 18-inch wheels.
Inside, the MPV comes with a 2-2-3 layout with Nappa leather on the seats within the first 2 row while the 3rd row seats are wrapped in leatherette. As you may expect from a premium MPV, the 2nd row captain seats come with ventilation and massage functionalities, together with 1-touch zero-gravity mode.

Passengers sitting in the captain seats can control these features directly through the integrated remote control on the armrests. They can also utilise the folding small tables, which can support loads of up to 10kg, and there is also the 12.5L heater-cooler with an adjustable temperature range of 0 to 50°C.
Moving on to the tech side of things, the Wey G9 comes with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 15.6-inch infotainment display with support for wireless Android Auto as well as Apple CarPlay. Also equipped with a 2,440W 21-speaker audio system, your unit will also feature a ceiling-mounted 14.3-inch screen for rear passengers if you are one of the first 1,000 early adopters of the new MPV.

When it comes to safety, GWM has fitted 6 airbags into the Wey G9, including side air curtains that cover all 3 seating rows inside the MPV. L2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) is also a standard on the Wey G9 which provides the MPV with features such as Auto Emergency Braking + Intersection (AEBI), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Intelligent ACC, Traffic Jam Assist (TJA), Lane Change Assistance (LCA), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Centre Keeping (LCK), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Rear Collision Warning (RCW), Blind Sport Detection (BSD) and many more.
The MPV also comes with a 360-degree camera system, a digital rearview mirror, and fully automated parking assistance. Not to forget, the Wey G9 also supports the GWM App, which allows owners to remotely control the doors, windows, seat ventilation, and air conditioning settings, as well as monitor the MPV’s location, charging, and tyre status.
