This is not the first time submarine cable faults have impacted internet services in Malaysia and most internet service providers will reroute traffic to mitigate the issue. TM has not named the impacted submarine cable which caused the degradation of internet services.

Typically, a submarine cable repair could take days or weeks depending on the location and severity. If it happens in Malaysian waters, it is worth pointing out that the Malaysian government has recently reinstated the cabotage exemption for foreign ships to conduct undersea cable repairs. This would allow faster repairs and attract more submarine cable investments into the country.

We have reached out to TM for further details on the issue.
