Samsung Malaysia confirms 7 years of OS upgrades and security updates for the Galaxy S24 series

With the launch of the new Samsung Galaxy S24 series, Samsung has caught up with Google for long term software update policies. Previously hinted by leakers online, the South Korean company announced that the Galaxy S24 series will receive seven generations of OS upgrades as well as seven years of security updates.

Samsung Galaxy S24 series owners can enjoy their shiny new phones until Android 21, expected to be released in 2031. The current version is Android 14, so new owners can enjoy their phones for quite some time still.

This 7 year cycle matches what Google recently offered with its flagship, the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Both Samsung and Google are now ahead of Apple, which typically offer between five to six years of OS upgrade for its phones, but about the same length of time for security updates. Of course there are some models that received iOS upgrades long after the supposed obsolete period, like the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.

Longer support for better reliable experience from Samsung Malaysia

Samsung says that the longer support is to “…help users reliably experience the optimized performance of their Galaxy devices for even longer. “ They did give a caveat that the availability and timing of the OS upgrades and security updates will vary by device model and market.

As comparison, last year’s Galaxy S23 series will be receiving 4 OS upgrades and 5 years of security updates. Xiaomi also will be doing a 4+5 update policy, but only for its 13T and 13T Pro models. Other brands that are following Samsung and Xiaomi for a 4+5 cycle includes Oppo and OnePlus.
