Apple had just only released the latest Mac Mini early this year, complete with options for both the Apple M2 and M2 Pro processor under the hood. However, it looks like Cupertino is already planning the next generation of its compact computer, with reports suggesting an M3-powered Mac Mini is already in the works.
According to Bloomberg’s Mac Gurman, Apple has just started testing a Mac Mini with its still-unreleased Apple M3 silicon under the hood. It’s said that this Mac Mini being tested has an M3 that features eight CPU cores in total—four of them performance cores and four of them efficiency cores. There’s also 10 GPU cores in it with a total of 24GB of unified memory. These specifications are roughly the same as that in the base M2, with eight CPU cores and 10 GPU cores.
Gurman also pointed out some new information about the possible M3 Pro and M3 Max as well. The M3 Pro is expected to feature up to 12 CPU cores and up to 18 GPU cores, while the M3 Max will have up to 14 CPU cores and over 40 GPU cores. The M3 is set to feature in the Mac Mini, the upcoming MacBook Air, the 13-inch MacBook Pro and an M3-powered iMac as well. The M3 Pro and M3 Pro Max meanwhile should feature in the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros instead. Unsurprisingly, there’s no sight of a new Mac Studio or Mac Pro, which makes sense considering Apple just only released the new versions of them at WWDC 2023.
You shouldn’t hold your breath just yet though for the new Apple M3 to debut. Gurman says that Cupertino won’t be launching any new Mac devices till the first quarter of the 2024 fiscal year which starts in October this year. The Mac Mini with an M3 in it in particular should be arriving in 2024 altogether. What you can expect to launch soon though are the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro, which are set to debut sometime in September—you can read more about that here.
