Apple reportedly working on a 15-inch MacBook Air running on Apple M3 silicon

Fresh off releasing their updated MacBook Pro 14, MacBook Pro 16 and Mac Mini with updated processors just a couple months ago, Apple is reportedly already working on their next generation of laptops. It’s said that Cupertino is planning not one, but two new MacBook Air laptops powered by the upcoming Apple M3 processor.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple is planning on having two size options for their upcoming generation of MacBook Air laptops, similar to the MacBook Pro product stack. It’s claimed that Apple would have the usual 13-inch MacBook Air supplemented by a 15-inch MacBook Air as well. 9to5Mac says that both of these laptops, codenamed J513 and J515 respectively, are already well in development, and both will be powered by the Apple M3 chip. Just like the last two Apple Silicon MacBook Air laptops however, they’ll be limited to just the non-Pro M3 chips, likely due to heat constraints with its fanless design.

Incidentally, that’s not the only Apple M3-powered laptop Cupertino is reportedly working on. 9to5Mac goes on to state that Apple is also planning a refresh of the MacBook Pro 13, which will come with the Apple M3. That’s not a huge surprise considering Apple normally releases the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro 13 together, with the entry-level MacBook Pro also typically not getting the Pro and Max Apple Silicon options that are reserved for the MacBook Pro 14 and 16 instead. There’s also word that a new iMac with the Apple M3 could be coming along for the ride with the three new laptops too.

As for when they’re set to be released, there’s no real concrete date for it just yet. However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman having previously suggested that the M3 devices could debut sometime during the Apple WWDC showcase in June this year. The M2 chip along with the redesigned MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro 13 first appeared at WWDC 2022, so the idea that Cupertino would repeat that with the M3 isn’t too far fetched.

If you’re looking for a MacBook Air now though, you can still get the older M1-powered MacBook Air with the last generation wedge shaped design for RM4,399 on the Apple website. The newer M2-powered MacBook Air meanwhile starts at RM5,499 while the MacBook Pro 13 starts at RM5,699.
