You’ve probably heard by now that Transport Minister Anthony Loke had announced motorists will no longer need to bring with them their physical road tax and driver’s licence when driving their own private vehicle. Instead, you can now use your smartphone and get a digital copy of your driver’s licence and the road tax for your vehicle. Here’s a quick guide to show you how to do so.

First off, you’re going to need to download the MyJPJ app; you can do so by getting it off the Apple App Store, Google PlayStore or the Huawei AppGallery. Once you’ve downloaded the app, simply tap on it to open it and you should be greeted with this:

There, you’re gonna want to click on ‘Daftar Akuan Baharu’ to sign up for it. You’re going to be asked to fill in your particulars such as identification number, name, telephone number and email address. You may also be asked to set up some security questions such as where you studied, your parents’ names and so on.

When you’re all set up, you should then be able to access the homepage of the MyJPJ app. You can do a bunch of things from there, such as bid on vehicle number plates, make a complaint with JPJ and check your demerit points among others. However, that’s not what we’re after.

Instead, simply tap on your profile on the bottom right of the screen, and you should see an option to show both your digital driving licence as well as digital road tax for your car.

It should be noted though that it’s not mandatory to switch over to the MyJPJ app yet so you don’t need to rip your road tax off your windshield just yet. As mentioned by Loke, you can still use the physical road tax and bring your physical driving licence with you for now if you’re not ready to make the switch. The digital road tax and driver’s licence meanwhile is just an additional option for motorists at the time being.

Motorists with learners driver’s licence, a vocational driver’s licence and foreigners with a Malaysian driver’s licence or foreign driver’s licence still need their physical driver’s licence too. Similarly, if your company-owned vehicles and vehicles registered under a non-citizen still need to display its road tax.

If you’re still unsure about the new digitalisation of the driving licence and road tax, Anthony Loke has already issued a simple FAQ about the initiative, which you can read more about here.
