Continuing its electrification strategy in the country, BMW Group Malaysia has revealed its latest electric vehicle, the CE 04. Unlike the iX3, iX or i4, it’s not an SUV or a five-door coupé; hell, it doesn’t even have four wheels. Yep, this is BMW’s electric motorcycle (or Motorrad in German, as the company likes to call it)—and it’s a scooter.
Designed for urban environments, the CE 04 comes with a single electric motor that produces a minuscule 42hp and 62Nm of torque. But it only weighs 231kg—heavy for a scooter, but a featherweight in the grand scheme of EVs—so it’s able to, ahem, scoot from zero to 100km/h in 9.1 seconds. But it’s in the zero-to-50km/h time where the instant torque makes itself known, the runabout zipping to the half-century mark in just 2.6 seconds. Top speed is limited to 120km/h.
Juicing the motor is a 8.9kWh battery that delivers a range of 130km. With such a small capacity, even a domestic three-pin socket will be able to charge the CE 04 (at 2.3kW) from zero to 80% in three and a half hours. The scooter is also able to accept up to 6.9kW of AC charging power from a wallbox, though it will still take 65 minutes for the battery to reach 80% charge.
As befits a scooter designed for city use, the CE 04 sits long and low, making it easy to get onto the “floating” seat. The futuristic design features angular, interlocking body panels finished in Light White and matte black, hiding front telescopic forks and a swing arm at the rear, suspended by a spring strut. Minimalist 15-inch wheels are fitted, shod with 120/70 tyres at the front and 160/60 rubber at the rear.
For improved safety, the CE 04 comes with adaptive LED headlights (optional in other regions, standard here), providing better illumination when cornering. You also get traction control for safer acceleration on slippery surfaces, along with ABS Pro for more controlled braking even in the corners, thanks to a lean angle sensor.
Other standard features include a 10.25-inch digital instrument display with integrated navigation (which can be set up via a BMW Motorrad Connected app), as well as a storage compartment with a USB-C port, a 12-volt socket, illuminated helmet storage and flex case, keyless start and a reversing aid. The CE 04 will be officially launched in March, with pricing estimated at around RM60,000.
