Xiaomi’s Redmi sold out in 8 minutes but does it mean anything?

Xiaomi has started its Redmi sales today and their entire smart phone inventory was snapped up in just 8 minutes. Such achievement will definitely make headlines. But without any sales figures, users are crying foul on Facebook claiming that their website had issues when sales had started.

Was it just a gimmick? or did they actually sold out with huge volumes? When Xiaomi entered Taiwan, they have sold 10,000 of its Hongmi phone in under 10 minutes. In their homeland China, they even managed to sell off 150,000 units of their Mi3 smart phone over WeChat in less than 10 minutes.

Like zero fare flights, the Redmi smart phone of S$169 is quite a steal considering it packs a 4.7″ 720p HD screen and runs on a Quad-Core processor. The Redmi’s offering is normally found in phones that cost twice as much. This certainly turns up the heat in the entry-level smart phone segment as the Redmi brings tremendous value for a lot less money. We would expect Xiaomi to substantiate its Singapore fire sale with sales numbers shortly.
