Netflix Basic Plan users upgraded to HD quality streaming from November 2022 onwards

Heads up, Netflix users! If you’re currently subscribed to the Basic Plan, Netflix will be upgrading its streaming quality to HD starting this November.

According to the platform’s Plans and Pricing site, Malaysians would be able to watch Netflix shows in 720p HD quality with the Basic Plan starting November 2022. Previously, Basic Plan users were only able to watch content in 480p SD resolution.

The Basic Plan is their second cheapest option in Malaysia at RM35 a month. It lets users watch and download content on one supported device at a time—without ads. Their cheapest plan in Malaysia is the RM17 Mobile Plan—which lets users watch Netflix on one mobile device at a time.

The Standard Plan, which costs RM45 a month, lets users watch content on two supported devices at a time but in 1080p Full HD quality. The more expensive option, the RM55 Premium Plan, lets users watch content on four supported devices in 2160p Ultra HD.

Right now, it doesn’t seem like Netflix will be charging the Basic Plan users anything extra for this upgrade. However, seeing that Netflix plans to go forth with offering a “Basic Plan with Ads” to more countries, having that upgrade would possibly make the Ads plan a lot more appealing to people.

The Basic Plan with Ads plan has not been officially offered yet in Malaysia. But in countries like the U.S., the plan costs USD 6.99 a month (around RM33). If the plan is offered here, it’ll likely be cheaper than that.
