GoPro to launch two new cameras that will appeal to entirely different groups of users

After introducing the GoPro Hero 10 Black last year, the action camera company is set to introduce two more models besides the current Hero and Max cameras in the next year. This was revealed by GoPro founder and CEO, Nick Woodman during an earnings presentation, as reported by The Verge.

Unlike the earlier Hero series where GoPro introduced multiple variants at different price points such as White, Silver and Black, GoPro will be focusing on making specialised cameras that would “appeal to entirely different group of users”, than the Hero and Max. At the moment, the Hero is their mainstream action camera with a single camera lens and it now comes with dual displays. Meanwhile, the Max is GoPro’s 360 camera that can produce VR content.

From the looks of it, GoPro isn’t looking at making cheaper entry-level cameras. According to Woodman, they are going after the professional market more and he said GoPro didn’t just want to make a “Swiss Army Knife” that’s okay for everyone. But it also wants to make “premium solutions” that would fit specific use-cases, focusing on people who might need more than what GoPro’s Hero and 360 cameras can currently provide.

Although the new cameras are designed for different purposes, Woodman assured that the new models will still utilise the same tech. Presumably, this should include GoPro’s HyperSmooth 4.0 feature which provides epic stabilisation. Unfortunately, he didn’t reveal what markets he’s after but we are guessing that one of them could be a possible successor to the GoPro Hero 5 Session, their smallest action camera which was discontinued in 2018.

GoPro previously had introduced its own drone called the Karma but it was canned after a series of issues. Unlike typical drones in the market, the Karma is like a 2-in-1 solution where you can use it as a vlogging camera when the camera is paired with the Karma Grip bundle. Could this announcement hint at a possible return to the drone segment? We’ll have to wait and see.
