Malaysia has recorded a significant spike in new cases today with 39 new COVID-19 infections. This brings the total number of positive cases to 8,943. There are no new deaths reported and the death toll remains at 124.
The Ministry of Health has also reported 6 new recoveries today and a total of 8,607 patients have recovered and discharged so far. The recovery rate is currently 96.24% while the mortality rate is 1.39%.
The number of active cases has jumped to 212 which are still receiving treatment. There’s 1 patient in ICU which also requires respiratory support.
Out of 39 new cases, 11 are imported while 28 are transmitted locally. The imported cases consists of 4 Malaysians returning from Korea, United States, Saudi Arabia and Ireland. There are 7 foreigners that arrive from the United Kingdom, Russia, Korea, United States, India and the Philippines.
There are 28 new local cases today which is the highest since 15th June 2020. This includes 21 new cases reported in Sarawak, 5 in Kedah and 2 in Sabah.
Sarawak has the most number of new daily infections which includes 9 cases from the Sentosa cluster, 4 cases from the Kuching engineering cluster, 4 cases from a newly identified Satok cluster and 4 cases from separate screenings. There’s also a new Sivagangga cluster in Kedah with 5 positive cases recorded so far.
The Sentosa Hospital cluster in Kuching currently has a total of 30 cases which includes second generation infections. The hospital has been closed since the weekend and close contact tracing is currently underway. Sarawak has recently announced a mandatory hotel quarantine for incoming travelers from Peninsular, Labuan and Sabah which will take effect from 1st August.
