Samsung Galaxy A71 gets lower camera score than Galaxy A50 on DxOMark

Samsung is upping its camera game in its mid-range segment by adding a 64MP main camera on the Samsung Galaxy A71. Although the pixel and camera count have increased, surprisingly DxOMark is giving it a point lower than last year’s triple-camera Galaxy A50.

Overall, the Galaxy A71 was given a score of 84 points which is the same as the Redmi Note 8 Pro and the Black Shark 2. The Redmi Note 8 Pro also features a 64MP main camera while the Black Shark 2 uses a 48MP main shooter. What’s even surprising is that the older Galaxy A9 still manages to score higher at 88 points. To break it down, the A71 scored 89 points for photos and 74 points for the video category.

To recap, the A71 features a 64MP f/1.8 main camera with a 1/1.72″ sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide-camera. On top of that, it has two 5MP shooters for macro and depth sensing.

According to DxOMark, the A71 doesn’t improve on the Samsung Galaxy A9, which was is their first quad-camera smartphone released in 2018. In their tests, they find that both main and ultra-wide-angle cameras perform well in good light with excellent dynamic and it produces well-saturated colours. However, they added that the blue colour casts can make outdoor images disappointing.

When it comes to low-light situations, they find that the A71 struggles to autofocus and the quality of shots is low. On the flip side, they reported that the A71 can produce better bokeh than the Galaxy A9. In the video department, they added that it offers good exposure for indoors and in bright light. DxOMark also says that the device offers effective video stabilisation in static handheld shots and while walking.

It is worth pointing out that the Galaxy A9 offers better versatility than the A71 as it features a 10MP telephoto camera, that offers 2x optical zoom. The A9 also gets a 24MP main camera, 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 5MP depth sensor.
