When it comes to gaming smartphones, you can expect the best performance with a top-notch processor, a high refresh rate display and a huge battery. Usually, the cameras for such devices are pretty average but it doesn’t seem to be the case for the Asus ROG Phone II. The folks at DxOMark have completed their evaluation and it is ranked higher than the triple-camera Sony Xperia 1.

The ROG Phone II was given the score of 95 points which is a point higher than the iPhone 8 Plus, Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and the Sony Xperia 1. Breaking it down, it got 97 points for photography and 92 points for video.

Although the gaming device is not aimed at photographers or videographers, DxOMark finds its imaging capabilities not particularly bad, but just a bit disappointing when compared to the ZenFone 6 which scored 104 points. The device features a 48MP f/1.79 main camera using Sony’s IMX586 sensor and a 13MP f/2.4 ultra-wide-angle shooter. Although it supports 4K videos at 60fps, they tested at its default setting of 4K @ 30fps.

The ROG Phone II is said to offer fast and efficient autofocus with accurate exposure, white balance and decent bokeh. Since there’s no telephoto lens, zooming offers limited texture and there are visible artifacts when you zoom in further. For video, it offers decent stabilisation while preserving details in both outdoor and indoor conditions. They noted that outdoor scenes tend to be underexposed and frameshifts are also visible in indoor scenes. They also added that noise is also visible on moving objects. You can read their full camera review here.

In case you missed it, Asus has recently introduced a cheaper model of the ROG Phone II. Called the Strix Edition, the device is priced at RM2,499 and it comes with 8GB RAM with 128GB of storage.
