UPDATE: We have been informed by Xiaomi’s PR team that the Redmi Go’s sale during Lazada’s Birthday Sale have been postponed to a later date.

The Redmi Go is Xiaomi’s new ultra-budget smartphone and this is their first Android Go device. If you’re looking for the cheapest new Android smartphone in Malaysia, this could be it. Despite its low price, it still comes with a 5″ HD display and it runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

At the moment, the product page on Xiaomi’s official store on Lazada is showing a RM9,999 price tag but the device will be available on the 27th March for RM299. From the looks of it, the Redmi Go for Malaysia comes in either Black or Blue.

At the moment, we don’t have the full spec sheet of the device for the Malaysian market but the Lazada page is currently showing a single 16GB storage option. Based on Xiaomi India’s product page, the Redmi Go comes with a 5.0″ HD 720p display and it runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor with 1GB RAM and 8GB of storage. If you need more, you can expand further via a dedicated microSD card slot.

The Redmi Go packs an 8MP f/2.0 main camera that can shoot 1080p videos, while the front gets a 5MP selfie shooter. The device doesn’t come with a fingerprint sensor. Although it supports dual-SIM, you’re only able to have one 4G connection at a time. Powering the Redmi Go is a modest 3,000mAh battery that charges via microUSB.

Since this is an Android Go smartphone, it runs on a lighter version of Android that’s optimised for a smoother experience on devices with low hardware specs. Redmi Go isn’t running on MIUI so you get a rather stock experience with Android 8.1 Oreo (Go Edition).

If you feel that Android Go and the 8GB of storage is too underwhelming, you can top up another RM60 to get a better phone. The Redmi 6A that comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB of storage will be going for RM359 on the 27th of March 2019 in conjunction with Lazada’s 7th Birthday sale.
