A good buy for RM1k: Redmi Note 7 is now available in Malaysia

Xiaomi’s latest Redmi device, the Redmi Note 7 is now available in Malaysia at a direct import from Mobile 2 Go. Two versions are available:

4GB RAM + 64GB Storage @ RM1038
6GB RAM + 64GB Storage @ RM1138

These prices are slightly more expensive than what we expect the Redmi Note 7 will sell for when it officially arrives in Malaysia. In comparison, the 4GB RAM + 64GB storage version retails for 1,199CNY (about RM724) while the 6GB RAM + 64GB storage is 1,399CNY (about RM844) so there is a bit of a premium for getting this device early before it is officially released here in Malaysia.

Even so, considering the specs, the Redmi Note 7 is still a worthwhile buy as it is a significant update over its predecessor the Redmi Note 6 Pro with a more premium build and vastly improved specs.

The Redmi Note 7 gets a 6.3-inch Full HD+ Gorilla Glass 5 display with a 2.5D curve. At the rear, the device gets a reflective material that appears to be similar to the one used on the Xiaomi Mi Play.

Under the hood, the Redmi Note 7 runs a Snapdragon 660 processor that’s clocked at a higher 2.2GHz. This enables the Redmi Note 7 to score 144,599 points on Antutu which is better than processors within the same class like the Huawei’s Kirin 710 and other Snapdragon 660 powered devices.

Powering the Redmi Note 7 is the same 4,000mAh capacity battery and it now charges via USB-C. The device also supports Quick Charge 4 fast charging but Redmi is only bundling a standard 10W charger in the box. Another good news is that the 3.5mm headphone jack and infrared blaster are also retained. The memory is also expandable via microSD card but the card slot is shared with the device’s dual-SIM tray.

For taking pictures, the Redmi Note 7 packs a 48MP f/1.8 main camera that uses Samsung’s GM1 ISOCELL sensor and a secondary 5MP shooter for depth of field effects. For selfies, the device gets a 13MP main camera that comes with AI assisted beautification features.

In China, the Redmi Note 7 comes with an 18-month warranty instead of the typical 12 months. There’s also a 7-day no questions asked return policy and a 15-day one to one swap policy for factory defects. Don’t expect this to be available in Malaysia. However, Mobile 2 Go does offer a 1-year in house warranty for the Redmi Note 7.
