The generation of flagship phones from Xiaomi – namely the Mi Mix 4 and the Mi 9 – may feature a triple camera array and possibly a periscope-style lens, according to an analyst report from Hong Kong-based GF Securities.

If the report is correct, the Mi Mix 4 and the Mi 9 will be the first Xiaomi phones to feature a triple-camera setup. In addition, the Mi Mix 4 is expected to use a periscope-style lens to minimise the need for a camera bump while maintaining a high zoom ratio, perhaps up to 10x zoom, with virtually no camera bump.

However, the periscope lens in smartphones is not a new thing. Oppo showcased the technology back at the 2017 Mobile World Congress. At that time, it demonstrated a periscope lens with a 5x optical zoom. The technology has since been refined and Oppo is expected to release a 10x hybrid periscope zoom lens soon. Watch the video below to understand how the periscope lens mechanism works.

The upcoming Mi Mix 4 and the Mi 9 are also expected to run in Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 855 processor and will feature 5G connectivity. The report also revealed that a 5G version of the current Mi Mix 3 is in the works.

Xiaomi is expected to reveal its next-generation flagship devices sometime in the first quarter of 2019.
