A total of 8,878 units were affected by the 2nd recall for the Chery Omoda 5 in Malaysia. The figure was confirmed by the latest statement from Chery Malaysia, which serves as a follow-up to the initial announcement made on 11 October.
As per the initial announcement, all affected units are eligible for a complimentary inspection and parts replacement at any authorised Chery service centre nationwide. Chery Malaysia stated that the first shipment of replacement parts is already underway and that the company is actively working to expedite delivery.
Omoda 5 was originally launched in July 2023 but has since been replaced by a facelifted model called Chery O5 last September. Chery 05 is equipped with a multi-link rear suspension system as opposed to the torsion beam setup on the Omoda 5.
Similarly, the fully electric Omoda E5 also comes with multi-link suspension on its rear. All three Chery models are locally assembled (CKD) at Inokom’s plant in Kulim, Kedah.
Interestingly enough, Chery Malaysia is not the first to reveal the number of Omoda 5 affected by the recall. The figure was actually revealed by Chery China on 11 October through a statement that was published on its official Weibo account.
Chery China also confirmed that the issue involves the welding on the SUV’s rear axle trailing arm from a particular production batch. The company is now checking whether this issue has affected units from the same batch that were released in China and other markets.
Here’s the translated version of the statement released by Chery China:
[Statement Regarding Vehicle Issues with the Omoda 5 in Malaysia]
Recently, a vehicle issue involving a 2023 Omoda 5 occurred in Malaysia, with no personal injuries reported. Chery Auto attaches great importance to this matter, immediately launched an investigation into the cause, and is actively communicating closely with local government regulatory authorities, including the Road Transport Department (JPJ) of Malaysia.
Following the investigation, this batch of vehicles may have insufficient welding strength localized at the rear axle trailing arm, which poses a risk of weld seam tearing under extreme conditions. Models featuring this structure have previously ceased production. In coordination with JPJ’s arrangements, Chery’s Malaysian subsidiary has initiated a recall for the affected 8,878 units of the Omoda 5. Relevant parts will be inspected and replaced free of charge as required.
Adhering to the principle of prudence, the company has launched a dedicated risk screening for the same batch of Omoda 5 models in the domestic and other relevant markets, maintaining active communication with regulatory authorities. This screening is a proactive, preventive measure, and Chery will disclose the results to the public in a responsible and timely manner based on the findings.
