U Mobile and Tencent Cloud team up to develop 5G and AI enterprise solutions in Malaysia

U Mobile has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tencent Cloud to develop practical 5G and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions tailored for Malaysian enterprises and SMEs.

This isn’t the first time the two giants have crossed paths. Back in 2019, U Mobile signed a similar MoU with Tencent to explore Smart+ technologies including big data analytics, AI, and IoT, which notably helped the telco roll out digital self-registration for its prepaid customers.

Fast forward to today, this latest collaboration marks Tencent Cloud’s first official AI-focused partnership with a Malaysian telecommunications provider. The joint effort aims to leverage U Mobile’s next-generation 5G network alongside Tencent’s established cloud and AI infrastructure to address real-world business challenges.

Accelerating adoption through the Enterprise Innovation Platform

At the core of this partnership is U Mobile’s Enterprise Innovation Platform (EIP). As highlighted back in July, U Mobile established an expert advisory panel, comprising industry leaders from the SME Association of Malaysia, the Malaysia Smart City Alliance Association and more to guide the platform’s strategic direction and ensure it addresses genuine enterprise needs.

With Tencent Cloud now coming on board as a strategic partner, the platform’s execution capabilities are significantly strengthened. Tencent Cloud will work closely with U Mobile to identify and develop potential enterprise applications using the EIP’s dedicated “Develop – Test – Demonstrate” pathway.

By validating AI-driven digital solutions against actual industry hurdles, both companies intend to see successful use cases progress towards pilot deployments, full commercialisation, and go-to-market opportunities.

Co-creating industry-specific applications

Moving forward, both organisations plan to host various ecosystem activities, including:

  • Workshops and innovation sessions
  • Technology demonstrations
  • Pilot showcases

These initiatives are designed to engage businesses, startups, developers, academia, and technology partners to co-create and test applications with practical potential across key industry sectors.

Furthermore, the partnership will facilitate a direct exchange of technical expertise covering areas such as system integration, security, 5G, and enterprise AI deployments to strengthen local capabilities.

According to U Mobile Chief Technology Officer Woon Ooi Yuen, the focus is on using their 5G network to deliver real value to businesses, turning promising ideas into practical solutions through the EIP pathway. Poshu Yeung, Senior Vice President of Tencent Cloud, highlighting their goal to enable developers and businesses to build impactful applications that support Malaysia’s broader digital transformation ambitions.
