Toyota finally kicked off its EV era in Malaysia last week by launching the first 3 fully electrified models in its lineup. One of them is the compact electric SUV called the Toyota Urban Cruiser, which was revealed alongside the Hilux BEV and long-awaited bZ4X.

The Urban Cruiser is essentially the twin of the Suzuki e Vitara. The new model is fully imported (CBU) into Malaysia from India as both Urban Cruiser and eVitara are currently being manufactured only at Maruti Suzuki India’s plant in Gujarat.

Toyota Urban Cruiser EV Malaysia Pricing, Colourways, Warranty

First and foremost, let’s start with the pricing… and you may want to sit down before reading further. The Urban Cruiser has landed in Malaysia with an on-the-road (OTR) price tag of RM198,000, not inclusive of insurance.

Hefty import duty might be one of the reasons behind the price tag for Urban Cruiser in Malaysia. Unlike CBU EVs from China, which have an import duty rate of just 5% (thanks to ACFTA), there is no preferential rate for CBU EVs from India.

So, this means the Urban Cruiser was likely hit with the full 30% import duty. Despite that, the SUV is still priced much lower than MITI’s RM250k floor price for CBU EVs, as the policy is currently being reviewed again by the Ministry.

Meanwhile, the new electric SUV can be obtained in several colourways, including Land Breeze Green, Grandeur Grey, Pearl Arctic White, and Pearl Bluish Black. Inside, the Urban Cruiser features a black-brown interior with a combination of fabric and synthetic leather upholstery.

In Malaysia, the Urban Cruiser comes standard with a 5-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty. In addition to that, it also has an 8-year unlimited mileage warranty for the SUV’s high-voltage battery and related EV drivetrain components  – this warranty can be extended further up to 10 years through an optional extended warranty program.

As noted earlier, the Urban Cruiser is a compact SUV, and it is competing in the same space as the BYD Atto 2, even though their pricing might not be anywhere close to each other. Interestingly enough, there are also noticeable differences when you compare their physical measurements:

Toyota Urban Cruiser
– Dimensions: 4,285mm x 1,800mm x 1,635mm
– Wheelbase: 2,700mm
– Boot space: 238L / 306L – 562L (rear seats folded)
– Kerb Weight: 1,788kg

BYD Atto 2
– Dimensions: 4,310mm x 1,830mm x 1,635mm
– Wheelbase: 2,600mm
– Boot space: 400L – 1,320L
– Kerb Weight: 1,570kg

In addition to having a panoramic roof with a manual sunshade, the Urban Cruiser has been equipped with sliding rear seats. Together with a 4:2:4 split fold design, this provides occupants with some flexibility as they can choose to have more legroom or have a bit more cargo space and at the same time, the recline angles of the rear seats are also adjustable.

Toyota only offers one variant of Urban Cruiser in Malaysia, which features a front wheel-drive (FWD) setup with a 128kW (172hp) motor that also produces 193Nm of torque. Performance-wise, our variant of Urban Cruiser is able to go from 0 to 100km/h in 8.7 seconds and has a top speed of 150km/h.

The Malaysian variant is also equipped with a 61.1kWh LFP battery and can deliver a WLTP-rated range of 426km. When it comes to charging, the Urban Cruiser for our market can support a DC charging speed of up to 67kW while its AC charging speed maxes out at 7kW.

With a turning radius of 5.2 meters, the EV has also been equipped with a MacPherson strut suspension setup on the front, while there is also a multi-link suspension system on its rear. The Urban Cruiser variant for Malaysia comes standard with 18-inch aluminium wheels and MRF Wanderer Street 225/55 tyres.

There is also a 10.1-inch infotainment touch screen with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while the audio duties are being handled by a 9-speaker JBL sound system.

As for safety features, the Urban Cruiser is equipped with 7 airbags, a 360-degree camera system, and a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) for both front and rear section of the SUV.
