The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has lifted its temporary restriction on Grok, after confirming that additional preventive and safety measures have been implemented by the social media and AI platform.

According to MCMC, a meeting was held on 21 January 2026 involving the Ministry of Communications, MCMC, and representatives from X to seek clarification and assurances about Grok’s operations. The discussion focused on compliance with Malaysian laws as well as the implementation of appropriate preventive measures.

During the meeting, X confirmed that the required safety measures had been implemented for the Grok application. Following the explanations and initial confirmations provided, MCMC decided to withdraw the temporary access restriction that had been imposed on Grok.

However, MCMC said that the decision is subject to continuous monitoring by the authorities.

MCMC reiterated that user safety remains a priority, adding that any failure to comply with Malaysian laws or any future violations will be dealt with firmly in accordance with existing legal provisions.

To recap, MCMC had imposed a temporary restriction on Grok last week following repeated misuse of Grok’s AI tool to generate harmful content. According to MCMC, this includes generation of obscene, sexually explicit, indecent and grossly offensive images and content involving women and minors.

MCMC had earlier threaten to take legal action against grok over alleged failures to ensure user safety.

The regulator said content allegedly involving women and minors is of serious concern, adding that such conduct contravenes Malaysian law and undermines the entities’ stated safety commitments.
