ChargEV is deploying Penang’s largest DC Charging Hub in Seberang Jaya

ChargEV is currently deploying an EV charging hub located at Centre of Excellence (COE) Cell Agritech and it is expected to be the largest in Penang. Located in Seberang Jaya, the new EV charging location is about 5km away from the Penang Bridge Toll Plaza.

With more EVs hitting the roads, there’s a growing need for large scale EV charging hubs in Malaysia. Once completed, this location would be ideal for EV drivers top up their vehicles before continuing their journey to Kedah, Perlis and Kelantan.

In case you’re wondering, Cell AgriTech is Malaysia’s first cultivated meat production facility using stem cell technology.

Before this EV charging site goes online, here’s a first look at the location.

For this ChargEV Cell Agritech charging hub, the Charge Point Operator (CPO) is using eLoaded’s DC Grid system and there are a total of 14 EV charging bays. This is a similar deployment as ChargEV’s recent large scale charging hubs at Elmina Lakeside Mall and Johor Premium Outlets (JPO).

For each EV charging bay, ChargEV is installing eLoaded’s skinny eLiix DC charging cables with CCS2 nozzle. These charge points not only occupies a smaller footprint but they are also easier to handle due to its flexible design.

Depending on the setup, the water-cooled nozzles are capable of dispensing up to 1MW of power. On the far left, there’s a larger charging bay which is meant for larger commercial EV trucks and prime movers.

So far we don’t know what’s the total power capacity for this site and we hope it has at least 600kW considering it will be shared across 14 charging bays. A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) could be added to provide increased charging capacity during peak charging times.

Besides this ChargEV location, Powerbee has recently announced a new EV charging hub in Penang that’s launching later this year. Located at Design Village Outlet Mall (BVOM) in Batu Kawan, the new Powerbee charging hub will feature a 120kW DC charger with two CCS2 nozzles and 12 charging bays with 22kW AC charge points each.
