Malaysia currently has three digital banks that’s open to the public and it appears that Boost Bank could be the first to enable contactless mobile payments via Google Pay. Google Pay is a Google Wallet feature which allows Android users to make contactless payments similar to Samsung Pay and Apple Pay.
According to Google’s updated list for NFC payments, Boost Bank’s Mastercard Debit Card is now a supported card.
15 Banks/Providers now support Google Pay contactless payments in Malaysia
There are currently 15 banks/financial providers that support Google Pay payments which include AmBank, Bank Muamalat, CIMB, Hong Leong, HSBC, Maybank, Public Bank, RHB, Standard Chartered and Wise. Besides Boost Bank, Alliance Bank is also among the new supported banks for Malaysia.
Boost Bank can’t be setup for Google Pay yet
If you’ve not used Google Pay before, you must first download the Google Wallet app from the Google Play Store.
Before you get too excited, the Boost Bank Debit Card isn’t ready yet for Google Pay. We’ve tried to add our card to Google Wallet but gave us an error as it can’t be set up for contactless payments yet. However, the card can be saved into your Google Account to pay for other digital services.
Since Boost Bank is already listed as a supported bank by Google, we reckon that Boost bank should be enabling the contactless feature soon. Once enabled, Boost Bank could possibly be the first digital bank to offer Google Pay and it would be interesting if they would proceed to enable Apple Pay support.
When it comes to alternative digital payment platforms, Wise is the first prepaid card in Malaysia to support Apple Pay and Google Pay since September 2023. Besides having a multi-currency account, Wise allows users to create multiple virtual card numbers which can also be added for Apple Pay and Google Pay.
