Petron, TNB Electron deploy EV chargers in Pahang, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu

Petron Malaysia and Tenaga Nasional (TNB) have officially announced their collaboration to deploy TNB Electron charging stations in selected locations throughout Peninsular Malaysia. These stations will be installed in phases with emphasis on the East Coast region.

The move is being made to help expand the national EV charging infrastructure, especially on long-distance routes and outskirt areas. According to Shaliza Mohd Sidek, the Head of Retail Business at Petron Malaysia, eight locations have been identified so far.

Two locations have been activated so far

Shaliza further added that these chargers will be located in Pahang, Perak, Kelantan, and Terengganu. The first site which is located at Petron Kg Gemuroh in Terengganu and features a 34kW DC charger, have already been activated last month.

As noted in our report, the site is able to charge two EVs at the same time and costs RM1.40 per kWh. Given its proximity to the East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2), the charger at Petron Kg Gemuroh might be useful for EV drivers who are heading towards Kota Bharu from the highway despite the slow DC charging speed.

TNB and Petron have also activated a 100kW DC charger in Petron Selising at Pasir Puteh, Kelantan earlier this month which is again could be useful for EV drivers travelling to or from Kota Bharu. Similiarly, it can also cater two EVs simultaneously although the charging fee is slightly higher at RM1.50 per kWh.

The rest of the TNB Electron charging stations will be deployed in 2025 according to Shaliza although their exact locations have not yet been revealed.

Here are some possible future locations

However, we do have several candidates in mind though. This is based on the map that TNB Electron displayed at IEMS 2023:

  • Pahang: Rompin, Peramu, Ketari
  • Perak: Lubuk Merbau, Medan Sejahtera
  • Terengganu: Kg Tok Dor
  • Kelantan: Laloh, Batu Melintang, Jeli, Machang, Gua Musang

While this might be an old map, we believe the information the map represents is still valid to a certain degree since Kg Gemuroh and Selising were listed on this map too. Of course, some of these locations may no longer be in Petron and TNB plans anymore which might explain why the number of places mentioned by Shaliza is much lower than the list above.
