Samsung Malaysia has rolled out the One UI 6.1 update for the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Tab S9 series. The new UI update brings Galaxy AI features for last year’s flagship and premium devices from Samsung.
What’s new in One UI 6.1?
One UI 6.1 is built on Android 14, which is the latest version of Android available for end consumers. Visually, the update does not bring much to the table.
The biggest story with this update is the inclusion of Galaxy AI for Samsung’s 2023 premium and flagship devices, many of which were introduced first with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series.
The full list of Galaxy AI features are:
- Circle to Search
- Chat Assist
- Interpreter
- Live Translate
- Note Assist
- Transcript Assist
- Browsing Assist
- Generative Edit
- Edit Suggestion
- Instant Slow-Mo
- Generative Wallpaper
The Galaxy S23 series is missing one feature: Photo Ambient Wallpaper. This feature creates a dynamic wallpaper on the home and lock screens that reflects the current weather. So, if the weather report says it’s snowing, a snowy vista will be the wallpaper.
The Galaxy S23 FE unfortunately will not get the Instant Slow-mo feature. The Exynos SoC seems not powerful enough to be used for in-between AI frame generation.
A new feature also introduced in One UI 6.1 is the Battery Protection feature. The feature comes in three flavours:
- Basic (Battery is charged to 100% and charging will stop. When the battery drops to 95%, the charging will start again to top off to 100%)
- Adaptive (Battery will stop charging at 80% while you sleep and will switch to basic before you wake up. This will depend on your sleep pattern)
- Maximum (Battery will stop charging at 80%)
Which devices will get the One UI 6.1 update?
The update rollout started on 28 March 2024 and is expected to reach all applicable devices within a week. Here is the list of the models applicable for the One UI 6.1 update:
- Galaxy S24
- Galaxy S24+
- Galaxy S24 Ultra
- Galaxy S23
- Galaxy S23+
- Galaxy S23 Ultra
- Galaxy S23 FE
- Galaxy Z Fold 5
- Galaxy Z Flip 5
- Galaxy Tab S9
- Galaxy Tab S9+
- Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra
So far, only the premium and flagship phones are on the update list. There is no news for the One UI 6.1 update for other models thus far. Lower-tier models are expected to see a One UI 6.1 update without the Galaxy AI enhancements as part of Samsung’s OS updates commitment. Even so, we may see some features trickle down to the lower-tier models, just that we don’t know which features it will be.
If you own any of the models listed above, you can expect an update reminder soon or you can head to the ‘Software Update’ tab in your Settings menu to force the update. In the meantime, check out our video on the Galaxy AI right here:
