According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple is currently in talks with Google to include the Gemini AI engine directly into the iPhone. If this agreement goes through, it will impact and shake up the AI industry on a massive level.
The talks involve Apple licensing Google’s generative Gemini AI model to power AI features in the iPhone. While Apple is also working on its own AI model, Google’s Gemini will be used for generative purposes including functions for creating images and writing essays based on simple prompts.
The Gemini deal will give Google a leg up in the consumer AI scene as companies strive to create language models powerful enough to live on smartphones. Samsung’s Galaxy AI is one of the first to have AI features running on-device without depending on a constant connection to the cloud – which is based on Gemini.
Apple also recently held discussions with OpenAI and has considered using its model, according to people familiar with the matter.
Apple and Google working together again
Google working with Apple for iPhone features is nothing new. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, pays billions of dollars annually to have the Google search engine as the default search option for iPhones and other devices.
The fact that Apple is open to working with third parties for AI features does signal that Cupertino is facing a stumbling block in developing its Large Language Model (LLM) called Ajax.
Any news on the collaboration will most likely be announced in June when Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will be held. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, has previously promised a major AI announcement this year. He told investors in an earnings call earlier this year that the company would release transformative features that “break new ground.”
