After almost 8 months since Tesla started accepting orders for the Model Y, Tesla Malaysia will finally commence deliveries for the fully electric SUV. Interestingly, the Tesla Model Y was the first model to launch in Malaysia but the company started customer deliveries for its newer upgraded Tesla Model 3 back in November last year.
Tesla Model Y Malaysian Pricing
The Tesla Model Y’s first delivery in Malaysia is scheduled to take place in the middle of next week and it should be the usual affair like the initial handover of the Tesla Model 3. To recap, the Tesla Model Y comes in three variants and the base RWD model with 455km of range is priced at RM199,000 excluding other admin and registration fees. Moving up a notch is the Dual-Motor AWD version with 533km of range that’s priced at RM246,000.
For those who want a much quicker Model Y, the Performance Model which boasts a 0-100km/h time of 3.7 seconds, is going for RM288,000.
Similar to the Model Y, the white body colour with black interior is offered free of charge and you’ll have to pay more for any additional extras. The solid black and deep metallic blue options cost RM5,000. If you want the Stealth Grey or Ultra Red colours, they will cost you RM7,500 and RM11,000 respectively. Meanwhile, the option to switch to a black and white interior costs RM5,000.
For customers who opt for the base and mid-trim levels, you can also change from 19″ Gemini to 20″ Induction wheels for an extra RM10,000. If you wish to place your orders, Tesla Malaysia’s website has indicated an expected delivery target of Q2 2024.
What do you get with the Tesla Model Y?
After the launch of the upgraded Tesla Model 3 (aka Project Highland), customers who ordered the Model Y were offered the option to switch their order to the Model 3 without losing their RM1,000 non-refundable order fee. While the Model 3 is Tesla Malaysia’s latest and greatest, there are a couple of advantages if you stick around for the Model Y.
Besides having larger cabin space and a bigger boot, the Model Y still offers a traditional gear selector and indicator stalks behind the steering wheels. This allows users to drive normally without faffing around with a touch screen and steering wheel buttons for vital car functions.
While the Model 3 boasts improved efficiency and range, the top speed for both RWD and Long Range models is limited to 201km/h. The Model Y can get to higher speeds with a maximum of 217km/h for the RWD and LR models, while the Performance model can go higher with a top speed of 250km/h.
Of course, the Model Y being an older version loses out on some new additions that the Model 3 has. This includes ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, additional speakers and a new 8″ screen for rear occupants.
