[UPDATE 26/02/24] – We have added images of the Galaxy Ring from the MWC 2024 showfloor
As part of the Samsung Galaxy S24 series launch, Samsung announced a new health-tracking device called the Galaxy Ring. They hinted that the Ring is coming soon and lo & behold, it made its official appearance at Mobile World Congress 2024 which is happening now in Barcelona.
Samsung calls the Galaxy Ring “a new health form factor that simplifies everyday wellness, supporting smarter and healthier living via a more connected digital wellness platform.”
The Galaxy Ring was shown during a media briefing at the trade show, where more details of the product were shared with the journalists attending. We can expect the Galaxy Ring to have a suite of “leading” sensors, but the company did not elaborate on what sensors will be on board. Based on a press image, however, we can at least expect sensors for steps and sleep tracking on the Galaxy Ring.
Heart rate monitoring should also be present as it is part of the device’s sleep-tracking function. Data collected for sleep tracking includes heart rate, sleep latency and movements in the night. One function that may come with the ring is tracking sleep apnea, which is one of the causes of snoring.
The Galaxy Ring will help track data for a new health metric Samsung is adding to the Samsung Health app soon called My Vitality Score. The score incorporates several factors into its calculation including sleep, activity, resting heart rate and heart rate variability into a single metric. The new metric will also come to Samsung Galaxy Watch 6, but will need a Galaxy S24-series phone to work.
For those looking to start a family, the Galaxy Ring will also track fertility in partnership with the Natural Cycles birth control app. Samsung said that the Ring should work in tandem with the Galaxy Watch for a seamless health-tracking system.
Samsung in answering a question by Android Authority that the ring should have a battery life of more than two days, but did not commit to any firm numbers. To coordinate with outfits, the Ring will come in three colours – platinum silver, ceramic black, and gold. Each colour will be available in ring sizes from 5 to 13. There are no hints on when the Galaxy Ring will hit the market sadly.
