If you’re a Maxis postpaid customer who travels overseas a lot, take note that you’ll have to pay more for the 30-day multi-country unlimited data roaming pass. To cater to more short-term travellers, Maxis has also introduced two new multi-country data roam passes for ASEAN and worldwide which start from RM39.
Maxis introduces 3-day ASEAN Plus Pass
For those travelling within ASEAN, Maxis has introduced a cheaper 3-day ASEAN Plus pass for RM39. This is a multi-country pass which allows you to stay connected in several Southeast Asian countries as long as the pass is still valid and it is cheaper than activating daily roaming passes (From RM29/day). If your trip is more than 3 days, Maxis is still offering the 7-day ASEAN Plus pass which costs RM49.
The ASEAN Plus pass covers Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Laos, Macau, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand & Vietnam.
Despite being “Unlimited” the high-speed data roaming pass does come with a Fair Usage Policy (FUP) of 2GB per day. Once you’ve hit your 2GB limit, your speed will be throttled to 1Mbps, which is still decent for video streaming in standard definition. The FUP will reset daily at 12am Malaysian time.
Maxis’ 30-day worldwide data roam pass now costs RM119
If you need to stay connected in more than 70 countries worldwide including the United States of America, Europe and Australia, you can go for the World Unlimited Data Pass. Previously, priced at RM99/month, the 30-day worldwide unlimited data pass is now going for RM119/month, which is RM20 more than before.
However, Maxis has introduced a “cheaper” 15-day Data Roaming Pass which also provides “unlimited” data roaming in multiple countries worldwide for RM89. If you’re just making a single overseas trip in a month, this should be more than enough if you’re spending less than two weeks away from Malaysia. However, it would be more worthwhile to take the 30-day pass if you’re going on several overseas trips within a month.
The same 2GB per day FUP also applies and it also resets at 12am Malaysia time.
As a comparison, CelcomDigi’s 30-day multi-country data roam pass which covers over 57 countries is still priced at RM98. CelcomDigi also offers a 7-day Asia data roam pass for RM58.
Data roaming customers can also enjoy 5G overseas at selected countries overseas. You can refer to their roaming pages and select your destination to find out if the roaming partner telco supports 5G.
Remember to disable voice mail before travelling overseas
In case you missed it, it is recommended that you disable voice mail before you travel overseas. Any unanswered call that goes into your Voice Mall will incur expensive roaming charges.
For Maxis postpaid customers, do note that Maxis will automatically charge you RM15 for its 1 Day Calls & SMS Unlimited pass if you make or receive any calls, or send more than 3 SMS in a day while travelling overseas. There’s no way to switch to pay per use so think twice before answering any calls or allowing calls to go into voice mail on your Maxis postpaid line.
