Microsoft is deleting the right CTRL key, and replacing it with a new key

2024 is the year for Microsoft to basically insert AI into just about every device moving forward. How? They are removing the CTRL key on the right of the keyboard, near the arrow keys and replacing it with a dedicated Copilot key instead.

Not only we will see this key replacement on laptops moving forward, but this change will also be happening for all peripherals that connects to Windows machines from now on.

This will be the first big change to the current standard keyboard layout since it was introduced way back in 1987 and adopted by IBM. The Windows key was introduced in 1994 by, well, Microsoft.

As said by Microsoft, the introduction of the Copilot key marks the first significant change to the Windows PC keyboard in nearly three decades. We will be seeing devices launched and introduced at the upcoming CES featuring the new Copilot key – most likely on laptops first, then peripherals. The new key will be rolled out to products from now until Spring 2024 in stages.

This AI push is in line with the company’s focus on AI in 2024, which started with the rebranding of the Edge browser on Android and iOS to “Microsoft Edge: AI Browser”.

Currently, Copilot is already live on the latest build of Windows 11, as well as Microsoft Office 365.
