After a little back and forth over whether the Magic V2 is coming to Malaysia or not, Honor is finally letting the cat out of the bag by confirming the imminent arrival of its thinnest and lightest foldable smartphone. They have not fully announced just when exactly it will be launched on our shores, but they are teasing it by having an exclusive preview for local media tonight where they claim they’ll even be able to lift it up by tying the Magic V2 to a helium balloon.
On top of that, Honor Malaysia is running a contest in conjunction with the upcoming launch of the Honor Magic V2. It will require you to simply look around you for any V-shaped element and take a photo of it, then submit it to Honor Malaysia. Five winners will be selected and will be given a new Honor Watch 4 smartwatch, with the winners announced on 16 January. You can find out more information about this contest on the Honor Malaysia website by clicking here.
The Honor Magic V2 actually launched back in July last year in China, and is now only making its way across the border. As such, you won’t be finding the latest silicon under the hood, but it’s still the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 system-on-chip from last year, with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. Also, because it first debuted last year, it comes with Android 13 out of the box skinned with MagicOS 7.2 over it.
However, the unique feature of the Magic V2 is really with its design—specifically, just how thin it is. The Magic V2 comes in at just 9.9mm when folded, making it thinner than even the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, and just 4.7mm thin when unfolded. It’s main display meanwhile is a large 7.92-inch OLED panel pushing a 2344 x 2156p resolution while the cover screen is a 6.43-inch OLED with a 2376 x 1060p resolution. Both displays can also push a 120Hz refresh rate, have full coverage of the DCI-P3 colour gamut and up to 1,600nits of peak brightness on the main display and 2,500nits on the cover screen.
Elsewhere, the Magic V2 has a triple rear camera setup with a main 50MP, f/1.9 camera, a 50MP, f/2.0 ultrawide shooter and a 20MP, f/2.4 telephoto offering a 2.5x optical zoom and up to 40x digital zoom. There’s also a pair of 16MP, f/2.2 selfie cameras housed in each display. Keeping the lights on is a 5,000mAh battery with 66W wired fast charging. While there’s no IP rating nor wireless charging, Honor has claimed that the hinge and main display will be able to last for up to 400,000 folds at least. Other features of note include a fingerprint sensor, stereo speakers and support for WiFI 7, Bluetooth 5.3, 5G and NFC wireless connectivity.
No local pricing details have been revealed just yet, but for reference in China the Honor Magic V2 starts at CNY8,999 (~RM5,875.96) for the base model with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, rising to CNY9,999 (~RM6,528.92) for double the storage and CNY11,999 (~RM7,834.83) for an Ultimate Edition with 1TB of storage. The last time Honor released a foldable smartphone in Malaysia meanwhile was in April last year, when the Magic Vs debuted here with a RM5,999 price tag.
